In conversation: Peter Saville talks with Professor Alan Livingston CBE

SOLD OUT

Cornwall Design Forum is proud to announce a unique opportunity to hear Peter Saville, one of the most influential designers of our time, in conversation with Professor Alan Livingston, Principal of University College Falmouth, on Friday 9 May.

This will be preceded by the screening of a new film by Grant Gee, ‘JOY DIVISON The Documentary’, which is not due to hit UK cinemas until mid-May.

Saville will be talking about all aspects of his career to date: from his work as co-founder and creative director of the legendary Factory Records, to his ongoing work in design at both strategic and conceptual levels. In 2004, Saville was appointed as consultant creative director to Manchester City Council, and his conceptual work has been exhibited at contemporary art galleries across the world; including Paul Stolper in London, Galerie Neu in Berlin and Migros Museum in Zurich. The influence of his iconic images has stretched far beyond purely music and fashion, and has played a key role in the cultural development of Britain.

As the most prolific evening hosted by the Cornwall Design Forum to date, this event marks the beginning of a compelling new period for the organisation. The committee recently elected Neil Tinson (founder of Neil Tinson Studio) as the Cornwall Design Forum’s new Chair, who picks up on the success achieved by the previous Chair of four years, Helen Blake. Katherine Smith (partner at Empress Design) replaces Howard Miles as Vice Chair.

About this event, Neil Tinson says “We have scored two major coups. This is a fantastic occasion for Cornwall to welcome one of the world’s most significant designer's, and having Professor Alan Livingston as host for the evening ensures it won’t be an opportunity wasted. Previewing ‘JOY DIVISON The Documentary’ prior to its national release helps to confirm this as a significant event. It reflects an exciting new phase in the Cornwall Design Forum’s work.”

The evening is being held at University College Falmouth’s Woodlane lecture theatre, with the documentary being shown at 5.30pm. The conversation will begin at 7.30pm. Tickets are extremely limited and priced just £5 for students and Cornwall Design Forum members, £10 non-members.

Design week film screenings at the Poly

CORNWALL DESIGN WEEK 19th-24th November

As part of Cornwall Design Week The poly has scheduled three special film screenings in support of the event, they are:

SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY (12A)

Tues 20 Nov 6.00

Dir: Sydney Pollack (2006) Ger/US 1hr 23min

Documentary

A candid and engaging portrait of one of the world’s most influential architects, made by his friend for over 25 years, Sydney Pollack. This beautifully photographed documentary gives a unique insight into the influences, frustrations and working methods of the man who has produced some of the world’s most distinctive buildings.

KLIMT (15)

Wed 21 Nov 5.45

Dir: Raoul Ruiz, (2006) France/US 2hr 11min

Cast: John Malkovich, Saffron Burrows, Stephen Dillane

Artist Gustav Klimt (Malkovich) lies on his deathbed in a Viennese hospital in 1918 and recounts some of the most significant events of his life to his friend, Egon Schiele. The memories of his love affairs and the women who inspired his development as an artist are as rich as the surfaces of his painting.

THE DRAUGHTSMAN’S CONTRACT (15)

Fri 23 Nov 6.00

Dir: Peter Greenaway (1982) UK 1hr 43min

Cast: Anthony Higgins, Janet Suzman, Anne-Louise Lambert, Hugh Fraser

Full of the bawdy licentiousness and scabrous wit of the Jacobean era, Greenaway's debut is one of the most captivating films of his far-from-dull career. An accomplished draughtsman (Anthony Higgins) is hired to paint twelve pictures of a country house estate as a surprise gift. He agrees, but only on the condition that the lady of the house gives him sexual favours. A stylized portrait of lust, art, and murder most foul among England’s aristocracy.
